How Safe Sun Exposure Supports Senior Wellness

A little sunshine can go a long way — especially as we age.Vitamin D and sunlight are essential for both body and mind. When sunlight touches our skin, it triggers the production of vitamin D — often called the “sunshine vitamin.” This nutrient is essential for staying healthy, especially as we age. Unfortunately, seniors get less vitamin D than most other age groups. That’s partly because our skin’s ability to produce vitamin D declines over time, and many seniors spend less time outdoors. This is why it is so important to be intentional about getting outside and soaking up the sun.

Why sunshine matters for seniors

Vitamin D supports your body in more ways than you might think:

  • Helps your body absorb calcium, supporting stronger bones

  • Supports your immune system to help fight off illness

  • Contributes to heart health, as low vitamin D levels have been linked to an increased risk of cardiovascular issuesAnd the benefits don’t stop there. Spending time in the sun can also:

  • Boost serotonin levels, helping improve your mood and reduce stress

  • Support a healthy sleep-wake cycle through vitamin D, leading to better rest and more daytime energy.

In short, sunshine supports both body and mind.

Sun safety tips

Getting sunshine daily is healthy in moderation, but it is important to do so safely:

  • Go with a buddy for safety and company.

  • Limit direct sun exposure to 15 to 30 minutes.

  • Apply sunscreen if you’ll be outside longer than 30 minutes.

  • Drink water regularly to stay hydrated.
